"Water's fluid mercurial qualities fascinate me. Immersion in water soothes and centers, while a drink of water sustains life and nourishes new growth. Water's capacity to reflect, obscure, change physical states, and create patterns, makes it an eloquent metaphor to explore patterns of our own experience. Ripples on ponds, forests in rain, and rhythmic patterns of tree trunks are frequent themes explored in my work. In my paintings I push texture and color relationships while playing with different levels of abstraction. For me, there is something peaceful and calming about the reduction to abstraction-- meditations on change and interaction, a contrast to the complexity and chaos of my daily life. My painting process begins with the creation of a relief surface that forms the foundation of the painting. This is followed by many layers of color to form subtle relationships between texture, color and light. I usually work on birch panel, but occasionally work on unstretched linen and incorporate the organic qualities of the linen strands at the edges of the painting. The scroll format is inspired by Chinese and Japanese landscape paintings which could be rolled and transported in a small bundle yielding a large presence when unfurled."
